Our guide will help you learn how to turn off your iPhone 13 and its variants (iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max). Please read on to learn how to turn off your iPhone 13 using the hardware buttons, the software shutdown button, and how (force) restart your device using the hardware buttons or the Assistive Touch on-screen buttons.
How to turn off iPhone 13 using the hardware buttons
Using this method, you can switch off your iPhone without using the screen. You can use it when the screen of your iPhone is frozen or unresponsive, and you need to turn it off. The method below is similar to that required for iPhones 11 and 12.
Please note that the old way of turning off the iPhone (long-pressing the side button) now brings Siri instead.
- Hold down the Side and Volume Up or Down buttons until you see the power off slider.
- Drag the slider that says “slide to power off” to the right.
- Your iPhone will now turn off.
You can access Emergency SOS and Medical ID from the power off screen and temporarily turn off the Find My network. By doing so, your iPhone will not be traceable after you turn it off.
Press and hold the Side button for a few seconds to turn on the iPhone 13. After the device has been switched back on, the Apple logo will appear on the screen.
How to turn off iPhone 13 using the software “Shut Down” button
It is possible to shut down iOS devices without pressing the physical buttons. This way, you can shut down your iPhone without using the Side and Volume buttons.
It is useful when the Side button doesn't work or when using the device with one hand. Many iPhone users are still unaware of the virtual Shut Down option.
To turn off your iPhone 13 without the power button, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Settings > General.
- Scroll down to the bottom of General and tap Shut Down.
- Move the slider to the right to turn off the device.
How to force-restart iPhone 13 or 13 Pro
Force restarting an iPhone might be necessary for some instances. You may experience phone freezes or freezes on the screen of your iPhone 13 or when your iPhone 13 remains on the Apple logo or loading screen.
When your iPhone becomes unresponsive, a normal restart initiation will not be enough to restart it.
This is where a force-restart comes in handy.
You can force restart your iPhone 13 by pressing and quickly releasing the volume up button, then pressing and quickly releasing the volume down button, then holding the side power button. Once the Apple logo appears, release the button. That should force the restart of your device.
The force restart initiation trigger is quite a weird choice by Apple, and it would have been easier to hold all buttons simultaneously, just like on Android. However, this design decision ensures there is no chance your device force restarts accidentally.
How to restart iPhone 13 using the accessibility
Unlike Android devices, there is no option to restart or reboot the iPhone or iPad. Therefore, users only can turn off their device and then turn it back on manually.
In iOS 12 and later, there is a hidden restart button on the iPhone and iPad in the accessibility settings.
If you'd like to reboot your iPhone 13 without the Volume button or Side button, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Touch.
- Turn on the toggle for AssistiveTouch by tapping on “AssistiveTouch” at the top.
- A virtual button for AssistiveTouch will now appear on your screen.
- Go to Device > More (3-dots) by tapping the button.
- To restart the device, tap on “Restart.”
- Your iPhone will now restart automatically.
